The building design and construction of the Vicente Tagayun Elementary School in Silang, Cavite, Philippines exemplifies an architectural type that was popular in the 1970s. The construction is done of reinforced concrete with a corrugated roofing system on top for an open-air feel. The ground level is made up of precast panels. The floors are connected by ramps with access to each classroom. Generally, this is a simple design but it became popular because it was inexpensive and easy to build due to its standardization based on drawings, blueprints, and models. The structure is composed of the following: There is a special area for art and music for students to use. In the main hall, there are classrooms on one side and a multipurpose space on the other. There are also two dumbwaiter "hoist" systems to bring materials from the basement for construction of new classrooms on upper levels. There is an air conditioning system at each classroom level to keep buildings cool during summer. The main part of the building has a canopy system made using precast panels covering nearly all walls, floors and ceilings. This throughout provides shade from the sun as well as protection from rain and typhoons. Inside, the main building is three stories high with classrooms on all levels. The first floor holds a multipurpose area, a reception room and a lobby for teachers at the front entrance. At the back of the structure lies a large garden for students to play in during recess time. The garden is a part of a compound that overlooks an open field for sports activities such as volleyball and basketball. There is also a shelter for students to take naps in during inclement weather or change clothes after school hours. This was the first elementary school to be built in Silang from the 1980s up to 2000. While it is not as big as other schools around its area, it has a lot of space for the amount of students that come here everyday. The school also acts as a training ground for children by providing extra-curricular activities such as drama and sports. The other buildings that serve other purposes include a gymnasium, a library, a computer lab and a community hall used for gatherings and student activities. Residents from neighboring barrios use these buildings as an alternative place for education, work and play during afternoons. The best part about the school is that it was built in a short period of time, which allowed students to get used to the structure before making changes. This meant that it did not have to suffer from getting old or beaten-up while being used for many years. For the students, this means more time spent on learning, which benefits both children and teachers. The school was designed by architecture firm BPI-Escritoria, Inc., which had done other projects in Silang. The firm's director, Vicente Tagayun, was responsible for constructing buildings in Cavite during his career as an architect. The conception of the design came from Mr. cfa1e77820
